Twenty years ago my mom threw a surprise birthday party for my dad’s 50th birthday. He had a video camera with him in the car on the drive home so he thought he would tape the drive home from the dashboard of his car. The result is a dizzying video much like the 360 degree movie of the Grand Canyon I saw as a child. (Mom, Dad, where did we see that? I remember we were standing in rows separated by metal railings. Maybe it was Hemisfair in San Antonio or some theme park?)

Anyway, the other fun part of the video is hearing the news on the radio in the background. (Remember Gary Hart’s Big Boating Adventure?)

So I’ll periodically post snippets from the news that will be interesting to remember in twenty years.

Unfortunately, the news today is not so happy. Today we lost two cultural icons.

  • Suzanne Pleshette Dies of Lung Cancer at Age 70. How we loved watching her on the Bob Newhart Show! Who else could pack in so much meaning (and so many syllables!) in the simple phrase, “Bob!”.
  • John Stewart, former member of the Kingston Trio Dies at 68 of a Brain Aneurysm. I never knew John, but I did spend time with the Kingston Trio in CA in the 90’s and still maintain contact with George Grove. John wrote one of my favorite songs, Chilly Winds.

So that’s the news for today.

Oh wait, for football fans, “Giants Stun Packers and Head to the Super Bowl.” Not exactly news I care about. The last time I followed football, Tom Landry was coaching! Thank heavens Terry’s not an avid fan. One less thing to interfere with the lazy Sunday afternoons we look forward to spending together. I’ll put “Listen to ‘Chilly Winds’” on our list of things to do together on those lazy afternoons.
